Since I was really unhappy with X-lite, which was offered by sipgate as standard softphone, I tried to hunt down a free, compact VoIP client for Windows.
I found Phoner and PhonerLite. Both programs also exist in a portable version you can find on www.pendriveapps.com. PhonerLite has only VoIP functionality, whereas Phoner is able to work with different TAPIs and therefore can mimic a softphone for e.g. ISDN as well. Setup (at least with PhonerLite) is hassle-free, since many important SIP providers are available for preset configuration.
Happy calling.
