Packages I recommend installing on a fresh Ubuntu system

The following list is more a reminder for myself when setting up a new system.
  • ubuntu-restricted-extras and ubuntu-restricted-addons for enabling mp3 and all the other movie formats one usually needs, including the Microsoft TrueType Fonts
  • texlive, the LaTeX system and not to forget the appropriate language packs, in my case: texlive-lang-german
  • lilypond for typesetting nice music sheets
  • kile, if you like it for typesetting in LaTeX and frescobaldi, a nice frontend for Lilypond. Be careful: these require a good portion of KDE as well, which will take a while to download on a slow connection
  • for server installations (or if you want to comfortably organize your Windows Samba Share and SSH) all dependencies for webmin (see here):  and webmin itself (download here). Here the command copied from the webmin-site for convenient copy and paste:
    sudo apt-get install perl libnet-ssleay-perl openssl libauthen-pam-perl libpam-runtime libio-pty-perl apt-show-versions
